Beleskey was paired with Kesler last year and had a career year. He was hoping for 5mil a year as a FA but had to settle for 3.9/5 years with Boston. Murray offered 4/4 and he turned it down.

Silfverberg was paired with Kesler late last year, and clicked. In the playoffs he had 18 points in 16 games. He was rewarded with 3.75/4 contract.

Common among both players was playing along side Kesler. Hagelin will probably replace Beleskey on the second line and have Kesler and Silfverberg as his line mates. His 4/4 contract will be fine going forward (same with Silfverberg).

(edit: helps explain the Kesler extension also.)

Anaheim looks to have become a better team over the summer. I always liked Hagelin, and his speed and 200 foot game will more than compensate for losing Beleskey even if he doesn't have Beleskey's goal scoring ability.

Watch out Western Conference. I think the Ducks are the team to beat in the West.

Hagelin at 4 million might be a tad high but this is a very fast solid defensive player that still put up 35 points playing in a 3rd line roll in NYR getting no power play time. His TOI/GP; 15;53, last season in NYR ranked him 7th for forwards & his PP TOI/GP; 0:05, ranked him 22nd overall! I think Hagelin can generate more offensively given the opportunity.

I think the #2 LW spot with Kesler & Silfverberg is his to lose & he will complement those 2 players very well. I have Anaheim to win the cup next season & it's no easy feat just getting out of the west. This is a very good team that took the eventually Stanley Cup winners to 7 games. You have to love the team Murray has built & they still have essentially 7 million in cap space & are surprisingly young with stud prospects coming at every position!

Maroon, Getzlaf, Perry.
Hagelin, Kesler, Silfverberg.
Sekec, Rakell, Stewart.
Cogliano, Horcoff; until Thompson returns from injury, Jackman.
Spare McGratton.

Lindholm, Bieksa.
Fowler, Despres.
Vatanen, Stoner.
Holzer, Manson.

Anderson, Khudobin.

Nice signing.

I hope he gets top 6 minutes, and possibly power play time as well.
He should even get some time here & there, with Getzlaf, and Perry.
He was buried a little the last few seasons, with the Rags having 6 scoring forwards ahead of him.

A bit overpaid for $4m but if put on 2nd line and can produce, will be a solid signing...

I agree. I take Hagelin over Sutter in Vancouver with zero hesitation. Granted 1 is a C & the other a LW that has played some RW but I hate what Linden & Benning have done in Vancouver.

Great deal. Kesler silverboi hags will be scary. The ducks pk will b dangerous with kes cogliano hagelin. The rangers offense is poop compared to the ducks. The skilled plays should ops up lanes for hagelin

When I first saw the Sutter signing I thought I saw it wrong. I still can't believe he got over 5m.

Just a point on the stats....I have to disagree with the relevance of the 1st liner, 2nd liner, 3rd liner stat comparison and $$$ comparison. The whole idea is ridiculous. This is not the NHL of the 80s and 90s where you have Scoring line 1, Scoring line 2, Checking Line and Crash line. Most successful teams roll 4 lines and the lines are created by chemistry NOT who should be #1 or #2 etc.... I'm a Ranger fan but they happen to be a perfect example. Last year, you had Nash, Brassard, Zuccarello, St. Louis, Stepan, Kreider. So out of those 6, who is a first liner and who is a 2nd liner? Who gets more minutes? Even Hayes, Hagelin, Fast, Miller, got rolled with a lot of minutes too. And does this determination have any correlation to salary? I find the whole point of bringing up the "liner" designation of a player kinda pointless.

Surprised JJ didn't pipe in about how it's a good deal and then proceed to go on a full blog rant about cap situations of the Hawks...

Can't underestimate how much of this money might be coming from consistency as well. He's still just 28 so the risk of a big decline by the time the contract runs up isn't there, Anaheim has good talent so that he'll transfer over nicely even if part of his production was based on being on a good team, and (of course) he's fast as hell, which means more and more year after year.

No reason to think he doesn't put up 35-40 points each year over the next 4 years, which makes this a brilliant deal when one looks at other deals signed by players in his similar age range over the years. Semin immediately jumps to mind.

With the risk of a Semin-like deal always out there, I think Hagelin cashed in on his dependability for being "meh, pretty good" all the time.

Being a NYR fan I've seen a lot of Hags - really like him -he works his arse
Off and is a really good guy who I wish we could have kept but honestly don't see him as a 2nd liner -he's not creative and has pretty mediocre hands so doesn't bring
Much when put with skill guys. AV moved him up and down The lineup enough to see how he'd do with different combos. What he is is a very good 3rd liner who is a cap casualty due to his consistency -he was due a raise. He's the kind of high quality depth guy that a winning team needs but I wouldn't expect him to be the game changer some are hoping for. IMO he's of little use on the PP for instance.
Ducks fans will love his speed as he can just flat out outrace people for loose pucks is
Really quick along the boards and corners and is a great PKer. He's also kind of streaky with the scoring -at times looks like he'll score 25 then Won't score at all for a while. Always a great guy to root for though and I'm sorry we lost him.

I think Hags is worth it but he doesn't have much more offensive upside. I'd much rather have Zucc at 4.5M.

Hags best trait is that he's consistent. You will notice his speed every single time he's on the ice because he's always moving. His lack of vision and poor shot leave a lot to be desired but he will cause turnovers and go through hot streaks where he'll get 5 or 6 goals in 10 games.

Hagelin's contract is an absolute steal when compared to Benoit Pouliot's.
